The Role of Women in Countering Violent Extremism

The role of women in countering violent extremism is a growing area of focus for the women, peace and security (WPS) agenda. The WPS agenda, through its focus on promoting gender equality, women's empowerment, leadership and participation, provides a framework to address some of the root causes of violent extremism that lead to terrorism. The growing recognition that responses to countering violent extremism must be more firmly situated within a WPS framework provides the impetus for this panel discussion and for thinking through how we can ensure closer engagement between these areas results in lasting and positive impact in the lives of women and girls most affected by this violence.
